Shoulder Pain Q & A
What causes shoulder pain and stiffness?
If you’re experiencing shoulder pain and stiffness, its most often caused by one of the following conditions:
- A tendon problem such as bursitis, tendinitis, or a tear
- A fracture in one or more of the bones in your shoulder
- Arthritis, a degenerative condition of your shoulder joint
Fractures are acute, meaning they can usually be repaired and your pain goes away as you heal. But, arthritis, tendinitis, and bursitis may all become chronic conditions as a result of wear and tear on your shoulder as you age. Degenerative shoulder pain from osteoarthritis also occurs after an injury to your shoulder.
What are the symptoms of shoulder osteoarthritis?
If you have osteoarthritis in your shoulder, the cartilage that protects your joint by providing cushioning for your bones wears away, which may lead to:
- Pain in your shoulder during or after movement
- Stiffness in your joint in the morning or after a period of inactivity
- Area around your shoulder joint is tender to the touch
- Loss of motion and flexibility preventing you from lifting your arm or rotating your shoulder
- A grating feeling in your joint as the bones rub together
- Bone spurs around your shoulder
Older adults have an increased risk for developing osteoarthritis in their shoulders, as do people who’ve had previous shoulder injuries.
How is shoulder pain treated?
Fortunately, you don’t have to live with shoulder pain or stop participating in activities you enjoy. Dr. Chadha expertly delivers gel injections to your shoulder via X-ray guided imaging, otherwise known as fluoroscopy. This method of guided medical imaging allows Dr. Chadha to see into your shoulder joint via a continuous X-ray image on a screen.
This X-ray guided imaging shows Dr. Chadha precisely where in your shoulder she needs to inject the gel to provide cushioning and lubrication to your degenerative joint. Gel injections contain hyaluronic acid, a substance your body produces naturally. This gel restores the fluid around your shoulder joint, so you get both relief from pain and an increase in mobility.
With gel injections you get pain relief that lasts up to six months.* And, Dr. Chadha can repeat the procedure as needed for even longer-lasting relief from painful symptoms.
